Aloha Mai
Papa Mālama Honua
Mālama Honua is currently an elective science course available to students at Kamehameha Schools Kapālama. Within this course, students such as myself are able to learn more about not only sustainability, but how to live and maintain a sustainable lifestyle within their own homes. This class also has a heavy emphasis on the Hawaiian Culture and traditions, and how the ancient Hawaiians were able to sustain themselves and their environment for thousands of years. Mālama Honua, means “to care for our Earth.” Living on an island chain teaches us that our ‘āina is a blessing with finite resources.. As the work to protect cultural and environmental resources for the future continue, we must always remember to do our part in making this world a healthier and more sustainable environment.

Aside from just being an educational course offered at Kamehameha Schools, Mālama Honua is the name of the on going Worldwide Voyage by Hōkūle‘a and Hikianalia, our Polynesian voyaging canoes. As they sail across Earth’s oceans to join and grow the global movement toward a more sustainable world, they and the crews are able to positively influence various cultures and people throughout the globe. The Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage began in 2013 with a Mālama Hawaiʻi sail around our archipelago, and will continue through 2017 when our new generation of navigators take the helm and guide Hōkūle‘a and Hikianalia back to Polynesia after circumnavigating the globe.
